Comedians Detail: Capital Steps

Featured Comedian: Capital Steps

Video 1 Video 2

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them.

“They’re the best. There’s no one like them, no one in their league.” -Larry King, CNN

In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. All members of the cast have worked on Capitol Hill; for Democrats, Republicans and, and politicians who sit on the fence. Thanks to the scandals and screw-ups of our elected officials, there's never a shortage of material.

Says Elaina Newport, co-founder and performer, "Typically the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That's what we call the two-party system." Many stars and politicians, some of whom have been targets themselves, have performed with the troupe: Vice President Al Gore, Larry King, Pat Robertson, Surgeon General Koop, Mike Dukakis, and President Bush to name a few. In fact the Capitol Steps have performed for Presidents Ford, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton.

“I don’t think we could have selected better entertainment for the evening.” -Gannett-USA Today

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded 26 albums, including their latest, I'm So Indicted . They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

“…We have called you back year after year…each year you add something new and funnier….” -National Community Pharmacists Association

The Capitol Steps perform more than four hundred shows per year all over the U.S., covering territory from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon. This is musical political satire at its best!
